About GameCube HDMI options:

GameCube HDMI mods come in two flavors - digital port and motherboard mods.

Both of these will give an identical experience at 480p (the maximum native resolution for GameCube).

and can be upscaled in different ways (by the mod or an external scaler) for display at up to 1440p.  They are all digital-to-digital.

GCVideo mods - these tap into the digital out port which is found only on DOL-001 consoles.

The external versions (carby and prism) and the internal version (pluto) are both capped at 480p output.

Motherboard mods - these are soldered directly to the video and audio output on the motherboard.

The can be installed on DOL-001 or DOL-101 consoles.

The currently available ones are from Hispeedido and RetroGEM.

The Hispeedido gives a terrible picture and will not be discussed further.

The RetroGem basic offers 480/720p with limited additional video processing.

The shiny version offers 480/720/1080/1440p and the full bells and whistles for video processing.

It is the current 'gold standard' for internal mods.

How to choose:.

1 - I have a scaler already or want to buy one*** (OSSC pro, morph 4k, or retrotink 4k [either regular or CE version])

Any of the options - external GCVideo (carby or prism), internal GCVideo (pluto), or RetroGEM basic (shiny not needed).

will give a great picture.  Getting the RetroGEM shiny is not necessary - you can get all the effects on your scaler.

2 - I am not getting a scaler

On a budget - external GCVideo and rely on your TV's scaler.  Picture quality and lag will vary by TV.

Medium budget - RetroGEM Basic (you can upgrade to Shiny in the future - software update).

Not on a budget - RetroGEM Shiny.

*** Why do I want to buy a scaler instead of HDMI modding all my consoles?

Because you get all the bells and whistles through the scaler and can get less expensive HDMI mods for each console.

For some consoles you may be happy with a component output through the scaler as well.
